Standby Generators offer the ultimate convenience. These permanently installed units automatically kick in when power goes out, running on natural gas or propane. They can power your entire home and are ideal if you experience frequent outages or have medical equipment that requires constant power. However, they require professional installation and cost significantly more upfront.


Inverter Generators produce cleaner power that's safe for sensitive electronics like laptops and smartphones. They're also quieter and more fuel-efficient than conventional portable generators, making them perfect for camping or tailgating. The trade-off is higher cost and typically lower power output.


Calculate Your Power Needs

Before shopping, determine what you actually need to power. Make a list of essential items and their wattage requirements. Refrigerators typically need 600-800 watts, while furnace blowers require 800-1,400 watts. Sump pumps, well pumps, and electric water heaters demand even more power.


Remember that many appliances need extra power to start up. A refrigerator might run on 700 watts but need 2,100 watts to start. Always account for these starting watts when sizing your generator.


For basic needs like lights, refrigerator, and a few outlets, a 5,000-7,000 watt portable generator usually suffices. Whole-house backup typically requires 15,000-20,000 watts or more, depending on your home's size and electrical needs.


Fuel Considerations

Never run a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces due to deadly carbon monoxide risks. Even garages with open doors aren't safe. Place generators at least 20 feet from your home and any neighbors' homes, with the exhaust pointing away from buildings.

Use fresh fuel and consider fuel stabilizers if storing gasoline for extended periods. For generators used infrequently, running them dry prevents fuel from gumming up the carburetor.

Consider your local climate and frequency of outages. If you lose power rarely, a portable unit makes sense. For areas with frequent outages or extreme weather, a standby generator justifies the higher cost.


Don't forget ongoing costs like fuel, maintenance, and potential electrical work. Factor these into your total investment when comparing options.
